Katrina Kaif's Rise to Stardom

Katrina Kaif entered the Bollywood industry at the age of fourteen. She started her career as a model. After seeing her ads for the jewellery campaign, Hindi filmmaker Kaizad Gustad introduced her in his film “Boom” in 2003. When she acted in the film “Boom” she had little knowledge of Hindi. The film was not a big success, it was a flop. After surviving several flops she eventually made her way to the top within a span of eight years. She became a combination of beauty, grace and charm.

She was born in Hong Kong to British citizens Mohammed Kaif and Susanna Turcotte. Her father was an Indian Kashmiri and her mother was English. From Hong Kong the family moved to china, Japan, France Switzerland, Berlin and many East European countries. The family finally settled in England. When she was very young her parents divorced. After living in London only for three years she came to India on employment visa without knowing to speak Hindi or how to dance. Despite her lack of basic traits she started acting in Hindi film movies. In the beginning she was criticized for her poor Hindi and western style.
The breakthrough came in 2005 when she acted as Abhishek Bachchan’s girlfriend in Ram Gopal Verma’s film “Sarkar”. Her first major role was in “Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya” as a heroine against the popular hero Salman Khan. The film was a moderate success. From then on there was no looking back for her. In 2007 she acted as a British Indian girl in the romantic comedy “Namaste London”. It was a major hit. She acted in numerous films of which Apne, Partner were major hits. Her blockbuster film was “Welcome” which was directed by Anees Bazmee. In 2008 she played as Secretary Sophia, in action thriller “Race” directed by Abbas- Mustan. Though it was success she did get good comments from the film critics. Her role in the action comedy “Singh is King” directed by Anees Bazmee was a great hit. It truly was a blockbuster in all aspects. Her film “Yuvvraj” directed by Subhash Ghai was a commercial failure.
Katrina Kaif received her first nomination for Best Actress category in the Film fare Award for her role in the Film “New York” directed by Kabir Khan. In 2010 her film “Tess Maar Khan” was a major flop. But her item song “Sheila Ki Jawani” was a major chartbuster and she received Star Screen Award for Best Actress. Her films “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” and “Mere Brother Ki Dulhan” were also success. She is the first Indian actress to have her face featured on the Barbie Doll collection. She is now the best actress in Hindi cinema and is sought after by the directors.
