Omkara is a Hindi film released in 2006. Adapted from
Shakespeare's Othello it is written and directed by Vishal Bhardwaj.
Normally Bollywood movies are based on fiction, sentimental drama and
love seeking lovers fighting with their parents, trying to break the
taboos of society. It is not the first time on the silver screen that a
writer and director Vishal Bhardwaj taken a bold step to present real
life characters with their real life emotions. Although he is adapting
stories from Western classic literature yet beautifully interpret them
in Eastern environment. The best thing about Vishal Bhardwaj's movies is
that they are not only the translation of English script rather
converted into local environment to make it possible for the common
people attach these feelings with themselves.
The story is about Omkara Shukla 'Omi' (Ajay Devgan) who is working as an effective member of Tiwari Bhaisaab's political party. Omi falls in love with Advocate's daughter Dolly Mishra (Kareena Kapoor). Omi has two trustworthy workers Kesu (Viveik Oberoy) and Langda Tyagi (Saif Ali Khan). Everything was going smooth and only passions of love and loyalty. Omkara spread rumor about political rival of Tiwari and stops and Tiwari selected without any competition. He nominated Omkara as a candidate for the next election and Omi promoted Kesu as Bahubali. It is fact that whenever one's feelings got hurt he reacts same happened with Langda Tyagi. He was expecting promotion instead of Kesu but Omi decision infuriated him.
Being jealous from Kesu and to take revenge from Omi, he conspires with Raju who loves Dolly and has raged for Omi. Langda Tyagi with the help of his wife Indu (Konkona Sen Sharma) steals the gift of Dolly given to her by Omi which by a planned scheme reaches to Kesu's girlfriend. This displacement of Omi gift makes him suspect about Dolly's infidelity. Omi thinks that she is making him fool and sees it from Langda Tyagi eyes. He becomes blind and his poor judgment causes him severe loss as he allows Langda Tyagi for Kesu disposal and he himself kills Dolly who was innocent and loved him a lot.
Film is good cinematographically. Characterization is perfect as all the characters are expert in their field of acting and enthusiastically perform their roles. Only the drawback comes in the form of language usage as it captures the audience of U.P. Others are not so much appealed by the dialect and feel disgusting on some dialogues. The most prominent thing from my point of view is the negative image of hero. Omkara is playing the role of black sheep who is creating misunderstanding among political groups and distracting the people for his own benefit. A hero is always the role model for society as people think about his actions and thoughts always right. If he is preaching treachery, immorality and using abusive language it could not stand among the classics like Othello.
Kareena Kapoor is no doubt appearing so innocent and so pious in her makeup free get up that we really fall in love with her character. The scenes creating suspicion about her character and comments on her infidelity and loyalty makes us restless as well. She sinks deep in her character and performs so real that audience really condemns the distrustful behavior of Omkara towards his sincere lover. She rightfully deserves award for her performance. Saif Ali Khan also adopt the negative character in its essence however Viveik Oberoy has a very little performing margin and does not have the scope to perform.
