The first day of fasting will be Monday, March 11, according to Saudi Arabia, which made the announcement after the moon-sighting committee saw the crescent.
Approximately 25 percent of the world's population, or 1.9 billion people, are Muslims. With around 240 million Muslims residing there, Indonesia is home to the largest Muslim population in the world. With over 225 million Muslims, Pakistan comes in second, ahead of Nigeria (111 million), Bangladesh (155 million), India (211 million), and Pakistan (225 million).
Around the world, a lot of Muslims are getting ready for a month-long fast and the associated celebrations. Muslims who follow the fast begin their day early throughout the month with suhoor, or a pre-fasting meal, and break their fast with iftar at nightfall.
